2010 Summer Baseball Opportunities

There will be several opportunities for children between the ages 7-12 years old to participate in summer baseball during the 2010 season. As always, there is a place for every child who wishes to continue playing baseball after our spring season is over. Players will play in their appropriate age group.

We will be having a parents Summer Baseball meeting on Saturday, April 24th at 12.30pm at Lyon Park Gazebo. It is very important that parents of all potential summer players attend.

IF YOUR CHILD IS PLANNING ON PLAYING SUMMER BASEBALL YOU MUST MAKE YOUR INTENTIONS KNOWN BEFORE TUESDAY APRIL 26TH WHETHER OR NOT YOU ATTEND THE PARENTS MEETING

Ages 7-8 *** 12-15 players per team

For the first time, PCYBL will be offering travel baseball at this age. The group will be part of a summer league with the target of playing 10-15 games possibly in a 9u league and then will participate in one or two tournaments. The tournaments will require travel and possibly overnight stays. One of the tournaments will likely be in Allentown, PA. The players will be expected to make a full commitment to be at every practice and every game. The team will be assembled by the coaching staff and PCYBL. This will be a very different experience from our Rookie league and only children willing to commit to working hard on their baseball skills should apply. If you have any questions or would like to add your child to the list of potential players please contact John Sorbella at 914-447-5063. Space is limited. Not all children that apply are guara nteed to make the team. Evaluations will be held if necessary. If there is enough interest and potential coaching, we will consider having two teams at this age group.

Children wishing to continue playing but unable to make the full commitment to the travel team will be able to join our in-house program. More details about the in house program will be available in mid-May.

Team Philosophy- It is the intent of PCYBL to encourage as many players as possible to participate at this level. The coaching staff will be encouraged to get all of the players, in good standing with the team, significant playing time but will only be required to play each player 2 innings in the field and one at bat per game. Aside from the minimum stated, the coaching staff will have the discretion to play who they want, when they want, in the positions they want.  Parents should not question the coaches during or immediately following a game. The following day is the appropriate time to discuss any issues with the coaching staff.

Ages 9-10*** 12 players per team

PCYBL will be offering travel baseball and in-house baseball at this age. The travel group will be part of the WBA summer league and will likely play 12-17 games. This group will also participate in the Little League tournament in early July and then in one tournament on July 30-31st and August 1st. The tournament is in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and will consist of 5-6 games. Rehoboth Beach is a tourist area and has many attractions for families. Accommodations for the team have already been reserved and will be paid for by PCYBL. PCYBL will also pay for all meals for the team and coaching staff. It is strongly suggested that parents make travel arrangements as soon as their child becomes a confirmed player. More info on this tournament is available by calling or emailing John Sorbella at 914-447-5063, johnsor@optonline.net. A third possible tournament will be July 10-11 in Allentown, PA and will consist of 3 games guaranteed. Again, accommodations and meals for players and coaches will be provided by PCYBL. These tournaments will require travel and overnight stays. The team will be assembled by PCYBL and the coaching staff. Playing time will NEVER be equal. It is imperative that both parents and players understand that there is no guarantee with regard to amount of playing time. Parents and children need to realize that for a team to be successful it takes players of all skill levels. Children selected may possess different specific skills that allow them to be selected for the team but may not be needed on a daily basis. There may be occasions when a player does not enter the game at all, or play may be limited to pinch hitting or running. In addition, as players develop at specific positions, they may not be rotated to different positions in the field. The goal is to make a player more comfortable and confident at their established position and to help make the team more cohesive in the field.

All of this is left to the coaching staff's discretion and should not be discussed with the coaches at the field before or immediately after a game.
